Donna

I don't know where the question setter read that this was a UK No. 1 hit. According to my copy of the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles, it spent just one week on the UK chart, at No. 29.

Donna was released in December 1958. It was No. 3 in the Billboard Hot 100 on 3 February 1959, when Ritchie Valens was one of the victims of the plane crash in which Buddy Holly and J. P. Richardson (the Big Bopper) also died. It subsequently reached No. 2, but was kept off the No. 1 spot by Lloyd Price's Stagger Lee.

It grazed the UK charts on 6 March 1959 (a month after the plane crash).

The B side of Donna was La Bamba, which eventually became the better known song. It entered the UK charts in its own right in 1987 – a week after the release of the Ritchie Valens biopic to which it gave its title. La Bamba spent four weeks on the UK chart, peaking at No. 49.

Los Lobos's version of La Bamba, as performed on the soundtrack of the biopic, was a No. 1 hit in both the UK and USA in 1987.

Donna Ludwig was one of the central characters in the biopic, played by Danielle von Zerneck (opposite Lou Diamond Phillips as Ritchie Valens).

Donna was a UK No. 3 hit for Marty Wilde, entering the chart on 3 March 1959 (the same week as Ritchie Valens's version). It spent 18 weeks on the chart.
